Discover Khmer Kitchen Restaurant

Right at Additional Street 2 Thnou, the corner of Street 9, Old Market, Siem Reap, 17255, Cambodia, Khmer Kitchen Restaurant feels like the kind of place you stumble upon once-and then keep coming back to. I first walked in after a long morning exploring Angkor Wat, tired and honestly overwhelmed by the number of dining options around Pub Street. The location couldn’t be more convenient, just steps from the Old Market, yet slightly tucked away from the loudest bars, which makes the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming.

The menu is where this spot really shines. Cambodian cuisine can sometimes feel intimidating if you’re new to it, but here everything is clearly explained and thoughtfully prepared. On my first visit, I ordered fish amok, Cambodia’s national dish. The creamy coconut curry was steamed in a banana leaf, and the texture was silky without being heavy. According to the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, traditional dishes like amok and beef lok lak are among the top culinary experiences travelers seek in Siem Reap, and after tasting them here, it’s easy to see why.

What impressed me most was the consistency. I’ve now visited three times over two separate trips, and each time the flavors have been balanced and fresh. The beef lok lak, served with lime and Kampot pepper dipping sauce, had tender cubes of beef that were seared just right. The staff even explained how the pepper from Kampot Province is internationally recognized for its quality, holding Protected Geographical Indication status. That kind of detail shows pride in local ingredients and culinary heritage.

If you’re vegetarian, there’s plenty to enjoy. A friend of mine, who follows a plant-based diet, ordered stir-fried morning glory with garlic and a vegetable amok. She told me it was the best vegetarian meal in Siem Reap she’d had so far. The kitchen adapts dishes without compromising flavor, which isn’t always the case in tourist-heavy areas. Portions are generous but not overwhelming, and prices are fair considering the central location.

Service here deserves a mention as well. The team moves efficiently, even during peak dinner hours. On one busy evening, I timed it out of curiosity-our food arrived in just under 20 minutes, despite the dining room being nearly full. That kind of turnaround suggests a well-organized kitchen process. Orders are clearly communicated, and dishes come out hot and neatly presented. It’s casual, but you can tell there’s structure behind the scenes.

Online reviews across major travel platforms consistently rate the restaurant above 4 stars, and from my experience, that reputation is earned. Travelers often highlight the clean dining area, multilingual staff, and reliable quality. I also noticed a steady mix of tourists and locals, which is usually a good sign. When local residents choose to eat somewhere in a city packed with options, it speaks volumes.

The ambiance is simple but charming. Wooden tables, warm lighting, and ceiling fans give it that classic Southeast Asian diner feel. It’s not fine dining, and it doesn’t pretend to be. Instead, it offers what I’d call authentic Khmer flavors done right. You can sit inside to escape the heat or choose an outdoor table to people-watch as the Old Market buzzes nearby.

Food safety and hygiene are clearly taken seriously. In a region where travelers sometimes worry about stomach issues, I’ve never experienced any problems here. Plates, cutlery, and glasses are clean, and the ingredients taste fresh. While no restaurant can guarantee perfection every single time, my repeated visits suggest strong quality control.

One practical tip: it can get busy around 7 to 8 p.m., especially during high tourist season from November to February. If you’re traveling in a group, arriving a bit earlier or later helps avoid waiting. They don’t always take reservations, so timing matters.

From classic Cambodian curries to refreshing fruit shakes, the menu covers a wide range without feeling overwhelming. Whether you’re new to Khmer cuisine or already familiar with dishes like nom banh chok and prahok, this place delivers dependable flavors in the heart of Siem Reap.

  • Low season & it’s less crowded. Good service & tasty food. Price is slightly more than other places but it’s ok.

  • Great food, very tasty. Economically priced. Service was great and fast. Large areas for groups if needed. Went here a few times and would recommend.

  • Khmer Kitchen is a great restaurant located right next to the Old Market in the city center. There are outdoor tables with fans, so even on hot days you can sit comfortably. The food is fresh, very tasty, and reasonably priced. We visited this place twice during our trip and were impressed every time. We ordered Deep Fried Spring Rolls, Mango Salad — which in our opinion is the best in all of Siem Reap and made fresh — as well as Khmer Curry and Fish Amok. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and more than enough for two people. Highly recommended for authentic Khmer food at a great price in a lively but comfortable location!

  • Loved the banana blossom salad! Friendly staff, reasonable prices. Didn't like the fried spring rolls though. Place was empty when we went in for lunch.

  • It’s my best meal in Siem Reap. The banana heart salad was delicious & so was the deep fried fish. Huge serving portions but I ate everything on my own. The service was beyond expectations. Sreyleak was very friendly & efficient. The rest of the team were always smiling as well. Highly recommended.

  • Fresh vegetarian rice wraps and the Khmer Special Chicken Curry were both fantastic. Seyha was awesome, we had a nice chat about his plan to travel. He and the rest of the staff were just as amazing. We sat outdoors at a casual, roof-covered table, and everything was soooo yummy!
